Ill go with the Albacore. The Cavalla had a TDC breakdown and only one fish out of six hit(a lucky hit though).

Anything that doesnt involve sailing your sub 50meters forward and having your target sail directly across your path. It needs to be more Dynamic, where the target ship will not always be on the exact same path with the exact same course.
They should make them more interesting, involving searching for your target, infiltrating a port or base to take out a certain ship which may leave port on occasion causing you to come across it on the way in.
The single missions in SH3 were pretty lame so it doesnt matter what "Targets" we get if they are just going to sail in front reliably.
Also they should not all be *Quick* missions, some could be as long as a standard patrol.

I'd like to see a "Mission Maker" like the ones in SHI and SHII; the ones where you select all the mission parameters just to practice with.

For pure gunfire drama I'd go with the Salmon's life or death battle versus 4 Japanese frigates on October 30th, 1944. The only known instance in the war in which a submarine fought it out on the surface with deck guns against escorts, seriously disabled one of them and got away.

Thresher's attempts to get into Pearl just after the Dec 7th attack. Thresher was hounded by friendly aircraft and surface patrols and had great difficulty in getting in. A single mission could have the player commandng Thresher, but with allegience set to enemy, so that the blue units attack if detected, until the player reaches a cetain point near/in Pearl.

I think that, in addition to single-player missions, there should be "observation" missions which let you experience the battles and engagements of the Pacific (Midway, for example) without having to go there in your Career.

Either make it single-player missions with the player's sub starting near the events, or invent some "observation mode" where you just have a free-flying camera and the "</> camera" (and possibly some other features) and can just sit there and watch the fight play out. Would be nice to have as a "rolling demo" at presentations, too, if implemented correctly.

DEFINETLY!

That was my biggest gripe with the Silent Hunter III missions, besides from the lack of historical information (at least the descriptions were very well-written). Missions can be far more than just setting up an attack and that's it. When I make missions, I try to make them open-ended, dynamic, and challenging, and with a detailed briefing including friendly units, known and expected enemy units, known and expected hazards (sunken ships, mine-fields, etc.), weather conditions, and so on.

Empires: Dawn of the Modern World, while an RTS, not a sub simulator, is a textbook example of how single-player missions should be done.
