Another hour-and-a-half of discussions in the bar, Ullmann with his pregnant French girlfriend (yes, we actually get to see her), the crew doing odd and silly things while they're bored, the Old Man explaining to the Reporter exactly why he didn't pick up the British tanker survivors, an early air attack (second "ALARM" crash dive scene), an aircraft spotting that may not have been (I won't give out a spoiler here), extended depth-charge and repair scenes, more conversations around the table and a huge bonus: the whole thing is narrated by 'Werner', the correspondent.

Just for clarity, the announcment was in the english dubbed versian of the director's cut. Female voice saying "chief engineer of U-96, you have a phone call from Germany". I don't think he ever hears the announcement though. The movie never indicated he does.

In the German version (uncut) there are two annoucements while they are in the sub pen, in the English version there´s only one.

The first annoucement is "Two... (couldn´t understand the rest) with equipment, immediatly to Box 5, U-72. One chief engineer, please." In the English version this is "Chief engineer U-96, the optical workshop, a telephone call from Germany."

The second annoucement comes directly after that, when the camera pans to the next box. It´s "Chief Engineer Ritzkes (or whatever the correct spelling of his name is) to the optical workshop, call from Germany".

So that call wasn´t for the Chief Engineer of U-96.

the english subtitles depend on which version you have got. Most of them the translation can be quite poor but one of them, its absolutely pathetic and ive compared it with the others and my limited knowledge of German. I got my German mate in to check some stuff to confirm my suspicions and he said it wasnt very accurate in this particular version.

Yeah, and in the English speech version, various curse words which are in the German speech version, are edited.
