Default Obscure Das Boot trivia question

Hi Guys,

I was just watching Das Boot and I noticed something that sounds just like background communication but might be an ironic and sad point to this great story. Just after the night club scene the Captain, Werner and the Chief are walking throught the sub pen towards their boat. On the PA an announcement is made "Chief Engineer of U-96, you have a phone call from Germany". I'm wondering if this is a phone call from the Chief's sick wife that he missed in the confusion. It's presented so subtlely that I was'nt sure if that was the case or not. If so it makes this story tug at the heart strings even more... (I like the Chief and feel for the guy)

Since I speak only a few handy phrases in German I could never have caught such a thing. Nice catch.

I like the Chief too. He seemed like a good man.

Have you tried watching it in German but with English subtitles?

That is the only way to watch it! Are you saying that the loud speaker part is in the subtitles? I have the full uncut Das Boot and have watched it many times and I don't recall ever catching that.

I haven't watched it for a while so there is a good excuse to lose myself for a few hours.I knew about this part of the plot but it may have been when I watched it in English.

During the walk through the bunker there is an announcement asking for a chief engineer (Oberingenieur) to come to the Periscope workshop.

Because there is only one Ober-Ingenieur for each (here Periscope) department. Otherwise the word Ober wouldn't make sense.

My better half still doesn't understand how I could have purchased the 2 disc uncut version puting together the whole 6 episodes at a sublime 282 minutes of viewing pleasure.

I remember hearing that comment (in English). But iirc, doesn't he excuse himself to answer it ?

Or is that in the bar scene ? Been awhile since I watched it.

The Chief makes a call in the bar scene but is unable to get through.
