I just finished my first two patrols of my u-boat commander "gunther knapps" in the Med.
Patrol #1 My first command from the port of Salamis, my boat looking beautiful as the day she was commisioned. My crew, the bilge rats they are, seem to be excited and estatic of the adventures that await them. BUT ONLY IF THEY KNEW... After we set off from Salamis i went to my captains quarters to get the orders i had recieved from BDU, when i opened them i was nervous but relieved. My orders from BDU were to move to sector CO42 and to patrol for 24 hours, After reading i gave the orders to my crew and it was like a well oiled machine watching the men run to and frow to complete what has been asked of them. Now 30 hours after getting the orders to patrol CO42 we have finally made it to our sector and the game of cat and mouse is on, but coincidentally after 24 hours of patrolling nothing showed up. So we strapped ourselves up by our bootstraps and turned for home, after the 30 or so hours back to Salamis i went to my commanding officers office to get chewed out for bringing all the eels back home and not leaving them with the enemy. After a long stern chewing out i was told i only have the night to get some R&R before me and the crew needed to be back out on the open sea. Patrol #2 The crew and I find ourselves back in the ever restless creaking hull of our beloved boat, I tell the men to secure the last of the food and misc items they've brought on board, as we must be heading out on our mission. as we leave Salamis for the second time not knowing if we will make it back to see it again i once again squeeze my way to my quarters for my orders from BDU, as i open them i run my eyes across what seems to be my cursed patrol sector CO42 once again. "why" i think as i recall the last patrol where we saw more seaguls than enemy vessals, But BDU seems to know best so the crew and i head off to CO42 with despair in our hearts. We finally make it to patrol sector CO42 just before dusk on our second day of our patrol and everything seems to be all in order when out of no where i hear "ALARM ALARM PLANE AT BEARING 270" I shutter as i know planes can easially destroy this boat i order " CRASH DIVE" and the whole crew starts running to the bow of the boat in hopes we dive quicker. I can hear the planes engines roaring as the last of the men slide down the conning tower ladder, just as the hatch is closed two hawker hurricanes unleash lead onto us and i hear "ping....THUD.... BOOM" the crew is violently thrown across the room, "depth charge" i say to the startled men looking faintly at me their commander as i stand feeling the same feelings the men are but i must not let them know that. I order to maintain depth at 45 meters for a few hours to hopefully deter any more little wasps coming to get us. Around 3-5 hours later we surface after getting no hydrophone contacts and not seeing anything through the periscope, and we continue on our patrol. eventually we complete our orders and head for home, But on our way back to Salamis we spot a small merchant ship about 150 KM south of port and we move in to claim our first kill of our career. we move in about a KM and a half away from the small greek merchant (ps its 1941 in the career) and we input all the information into the TDC. I take one last look over the inputs, "LOS" i shout as the torpedo races out of the tube. Fast, straight, and accurate i say and i watch the torpedo from the wake of bubbles it leaves on the top of the water as it tracks towards the greek merchant, "15 seconds" my first officer says as he times the torpedo. "20 seconds" "30 seconds" my first officer says, i stand at the periscope dreading each second that passes i dont see the merchant explode, "FUBOOM" i look back into the periscope and see a huge giazer of water and fire erupt from the hull of the small merchant as i yell "WEVE GOT HER BOYS, WEVE GOT HER!" The crew lively after marking this poor ship for death as she slowly sinks, i order the boat to slow ahead as we watch the ship sink to the depths. After our first sinking on a enemy ship we return to our original course back to the port of Salamis, we make port later that day to a band, our commanders, and our beloved families. ![]() I thought this would be a funny or good read for any readers out there i just finished my first two patrols and figured why not make a short story for the first sinking, i hope a few of you will enjoy Have a great night and Happy hunting! ![]() Last edited by Flex02; 05-16-25 at 02:30 PM. |

I’ve had an interesting ‘problem” that has occurred 5 times in roughly the same place NNE, E and SSE of the Helgoland Island north of W’haven. Let me explain.
Leaving W’haven, way clear of the mined area, the first time and every time thereafter: Clear sky, quiet seas, surfaced, 1/3 speed, no aircraft, no surface vessels, torp tubes closed, full fuel.: Sudden message “Critical Flooding”...moments later – sunk and dead! Hard to understand. Accelerated speed was maybe +64 since I was clear of the ‘mined’ area and heading north. Hmmm. Decided to try again and resurrected the patrol and once again left W’haven. I now noted that the event was in the AN 93, 95, 98 sectors (as they all have been). Sorry, dead again, same areas, same circumstances. This catastrophic event has now occurred in the same sectors 5 times – 4 times returning and 1 leaving. The latest also showed less than 10% fuel remaining although the tanks were full when just recently departing W’haven. During each of these events I have used F12 to survey the boat on the surface and sub-surface. No damage evident, no explosions, nothing, just the message. Using F7, the interior is mostly Red or Yellow with flooding (as if the bow just was torn off) and many (most) crew are indicated as dead. Now perhaps the programmers have intentionally put into the code some random catastrophic events. They did occur. Not a bad idea. But this has repeatedly occurred at the same sectors and only with the same sub and dates in1942. I have learned to exit W’haven without going through the “death sectors” and am doing nicely in my now resurrected avatar. But it is a curious experience. Any comments from the developers who know much more about this than I do? I feel I have offended some Teutonic God of the Deep who lurks in AN95. -=Archive1=- |

One correction - dates = 1940...flying fingers, limping brain.

The British mined the waters around Helgoland during that time of the war. Best to steer clear of it.

During the development of GWX 2.0 - 3.0, Author Pamela Armstrong ("Silent Warrior" series, extensively cataloging submarine wrecks in British territorial waters) assisted us with creating digitized minefield maps that were only available by physically visiting British Admiralty archives in person at the time. We used those maps to create date-based minefields for British territorial waters and near regions. The Heligoland Bight area (Including Wilhelmshaven) was one such region specifically covered. With certainty the entire region was subject to the laying of offensive barrage minefields of varying densities by British naval and air assets during 1939 and 1940. The GWX campaign files naturally continue on in GWX-KC, where we consolidated them, refined them with additional material, and performed deep error checking beyond anything the community at large here, has seen in other modding projects. I do not have a British Admiralty minefield map for the Heligoland region that continues beyond 1940. However, I believe it to be a reasonable assumption that the offensive mining operations there, were continued and broadened post 1940. As it is with all other megamod core files, GWX-KC also does not introduce spontaneous random malfunctions or catastrophic system failures. There is no provision for doing so without dependence on an external program. Last edited by Kpt. Lehmann; 05-19-25 at 02:09 AM. |

Ran into that minefield a couple of times myself in GWX 3.0
![]() Useful overview of British mines here: https://www.naval-history.net/xGM-Ops-Minelaying.htm#1 Totally agree that minefields need to be in the game, but "instadeath" isn't much fun. Do minefields limit the maximum time compression available? I can't remember and I have not found any mines in GWX KC. That would give a hint of peril and encourage players to stay away. |

Have hit mines a few of times in that area. Lost two boats but was able to nurse one back to base, just barely. That first time took me aback, but found out later that this was a feature in GWX 3.0 and not SH3 being cranky.

Outstanding replies and discussion. All explained. I would suspect that sub losses north of K'haven must have been very high considering my personal experience. Can't wait to move to St. Nazaire or Lorient! Don't recall any such disasters when I was using the original GW years ago, but probably was just lucky or its is just too long ago to recall.
During the current events I did not see any violent turmoil when I went instantly to F12 to view the vicinity and would expect to have seen (heard?) some violent evidence of an explosion. I did suspect a mine, but there was nothing in visual or auditory evidence with any of the 5 events to certify that suspicion - at least that I noted or can recall. Will move on and try to stay alive. -=Archive1=- |
