"Maitreya" is the name of a future Buddha. According to tradition, a Buddha is someone who reveals the Dhamma/Dharma [truth] to the world. So, perhaps Sananda was influenced by Buddhism in some way? Or maybe it has something to do with Hinduism. It seems Buddhism and Hinduism share a lot of words, traditions and beliefs. But I don't know very much about Hinduism.

At any rate, the Wikipedia page for Terence Trent Howard (his real name) says that the name change had nothing to do with religion. Apparently he just wanted a new identity. It also says that "Sananda" is Sanskrit for "possessed of happiness". That's nice.
