Richard von Weizsäcker, former mayor of Berlin, then federal president, and one of the very, very, very few kind of respectable politicians that showed up in post-war Germany, once said:

"Parties have made the state their prey."

So did career politicians, I would add.

Thats why I am so unforgivingly hostile to parties and politicians in general, no matter their names and opinions, because what Weizsäcker said now is universally true, and everywhere, apparently.
