Default just have to sneak in

I've just engaged the large convoy I've been chasing on east coast of U.S.
Did an end round and got pretty close to my desired targets (two large tankers) before I was spotted. I would have only needed a one more minute to fire my eels and go underwater. Well it didnt matter cuz I got my four eels off, two on both targets. 3 of 4 hits and one tanker goes down right away. And twenty minutes later the other tanker which got hit once goes down as well.

Now just trying to evade the escorts (4 or 5 of them in the conwoy). They've been pretty close to my position, but no DC's yet.. Silent running at 1 knots, depth 80 meters and only 20 meters under keel

It's 4 am local time and I've been running silent now about 40 minutes. The weather is in my favor thank god.
oh yeah and the year is 1942 and running IXD2

So far so good

Guess the point is that you can get close with carefully plotting your approuch and keeping your eye on the escorts.

btw using NYGM 2.0 and loving it so far

okay this post got out of hand

Click on the button beneath the speed telegraph and instead of "Ahead Slow" etc you get a dial where you can specify an exact speed.

Default NYGM 2.2 & RWR watch crew?

S!

Situation: Enemy convoy just beyond visual range in light fog (10km visibility). I can't see any mast-heads or smoke and my watch crew certainly won't see them, but they are there. Suddenly my crew ducks, like they do when our boat has been spotted. This time, obviously, it's the radar on those escorts (there is c class destroyer leading that convoy).

I don't have any RWR apparatus installed yet (sep -41), so it's pretty strange that my crew can sense those radar waves . I have all the time in the world to escape from those escorts before they arrive on the spot and waste their DC's.

So, is it possible to make your watch crew NOT to "sense" that we have been spotted by enemy radar (without RWR it's plain rediculous)?

Sorry to bring up this old topic, but the headline was closest I could find with the search function for this problem.

Or is just something we need get along with?

Thanks

K

I always get at the convoy on the opposite side of where the escorts are patrolling. Find out were they are and their position. Move to the area were they will not see you. The merchants do provide cover if you are on the opposite side. The best thing to do is get the convoys track. Run like hell to submerge ahead of them, this means losing sight of them. Once your are where you believe they will end up, submerge and work the hell out of the hydrophone to pick the up again. You will probably have to change you position but not much to get back in to the convoys track. Stay submerged and let the sheep come to you. Engines off and silent as a church house mouse. This allows you to make all your TDC calculations at your leisure. I have escorts blow by me and keep going while the sheep keep steam at me. Let the torpedoes fly and seek shelter in the deeps at this point. Surface and do it all over again. You have to realize the U-boat would chase the convoys for days making end rounds. You need to do it also. It is quite satisfying chasing for days. Trust me on that one!! I believe quite a few do what they can the first time with a convoy. It is really satisying to keep doing end rounds for days. Reloads are done at this time and anything else you need to do. Get set up again and have a go. I will hound a convoy until I have nothing left that will blow them up!

S!

@ AVGWarhawk

Thanks for your reply, your tactics sound solid, but the actual problem was something different.

To do something for the game itself so that your watch crew doesen't magigally be aware that enemy is radiating them from beyond visual range. I would understand it if I'd have some radar warning systems installed to my boat.

To be spotted by the enemy radar is not the problem. They should do that, but I shouldn't be aware of that until visual with the enemy or until they start shooting at us.

Earlier (before radar) it was fairly simple proces to overhaul convoys by keeping them on the edge of your visual range and at the same time plotting it's speed and course and possible course changes. Then finally approach from the 0 AOB, dive and slip near or in the convoy and attack. Enemy radar just makes the overhaul more time consuming. Doable but time time consuming, which is not a problem if you have enough diesel oil and provisions.

"You have to realize the U-boat would chase the convoys for days making end rounds. You need to do it also. It is quite satisfying chasing for days. Trust me on that one!! "

I totally agree with you in this one. Who would let a convoy pass if there would be even a slightest possible for you to attack it? Usually convoy attacks lasts days for me too. In my last patrol I was attacking the same convoy about 4 days and nights and at the current patrol it's third night in a row with this one from Gibraltar.

Anyway, the question remains: is it possible to do something about the fact, that your watch crew have a sixth sense and they themselves works as a radar warning receiver. Be sure.

I understood you delimma but I do not think there is a fix. I have not experience the radar as yet because my arse usually gets sunk after 5 patrols...what can I say I run my boat like a cowboy

Glad you agree on hounding the same convoy for day.

Can I recommend you try this question on the Mod Forum? Lets see what becomes of it. It is odd that the watch boys can detect radar. Do they have alumium foil on their heads?
