Mooncatt 06-20-06 08:54 AM

I use greywolves. I try to makea run on convoys in the middle of the night on the surface and the escorts always spot me at like 4000 meters.

Well, if you think about it they are seriously looking for U-Boats along there route and any movement on the surface would gain there undevoted attention.

Best to Dive and hunt or equip the SHIII laser mod..LOL

Best of luck !!

But the fact is that real u-boats got very close at night without being spotted, including some actually getting inside the convoy. The favored tactic was the night-surface attack.

The weather, your speed, and your angle to ships are all factors that contribute to you being sighted visually on the surface. To get as close as possible before being sighted you should be coming at them head on, slow (ahead 1/3 or less), and with a chopy sea. Under these conditions I have been able to get well within 2000 meters before being sighted by ships (type VII). Of course convoys are much harder to sneak into due to there being multiple ships viewing you from different angles. Its best to use this tactic against lone merchants. Against convoys your best bet is probably the 'Das Boot' method, charge in at high speed and fire from long range, then get out of there. Also if it is 1942 or later beware you will be spotted by escort radar far beyond 4000m.

Good hunting.:arrgh!:

True, but was that not only during the early years of the war?, also could that be addapted to actual gameplay ?? I would think they have a 50/50 chance to spot you also would the angle of approach play a role to minimize viewable profile.

I am not challenging I am asking..

Sailor Steve 06-20-06 06:31 PM

Of course that's only early in the war. If we're talking late war then the escorts have R A D A R. Not much luck then.

That's a good point. Cobalt, what year are you playing in?

Hartmann 06-20-06 09:47 PM

Depends of the speed , angle and sea state.

i use two metods if the scorts are in good position, wait at deck awash at very low speed in one side of the convoy, fire at long range and dive or evade.

or the same but waiting first in surface and after with flank speed charge against the side of the convoy , firing and evade at full speed in surface if itīs possible.

i use a IXB boat with engine upgrades, and it runs at 20/21 knts in good weather :|\\

if the scorts situation no itīs good i use a periscope attack

ps249 06-21-06 01:14 AM

lol- no fixes needed - it means the AI is working the way it was intented to. Sometimes I can relax on the surface and spot a ship just over 4000 meters away and the next thing I know- I got shrapnel scraping the deck.Try ducking below the surface with periscope up- but you will suffer with a slower speed at periscope depth.

Surface and with Planes and Destroyers around is just Pure Suicide.

planes catch you in no time and made a bombard run over you and Destroyers just dont leave you alone for a long time

andy_311 06-21-06 04:44 PM

Attacks on the surface at night arn't allowed in 43 onwards your suppose to die,am lucky if I get within 4500m of a convoy in late 43 before **** happens.

cobalt 06-21-06 08:44 PM

im playing mid 41'
