I think Bond played by the early Sean Connery and now Craig represent best what Ian Fleming had in mind; in his books Bond is neither especially clever nor is he elegant or a lady's man. The original Bond has no empathy, no ethos and no belief except to serve, without thinking. The films with early Connery and now Craig are exciting, but it is for the (overblown) action, brutality and scenery, not because of the character.
Or in short, in german words, the original person of Bond is a bore and "bierernst", and the english "deadly serious" is only a weak translation. Which is why i prefer Roger Moore. He transformed the role and mocked the never-humorous macho super hero, he made fun of those thugs, was self-critical and a bit ridiculous. It is a sign of the times that the original Bond is coming back, along with other backward changes in society.
