I remember seeing a photo from Ansel Adams with the subtitle Golden Gate and thinking, hmmm, it is missing something. Then realized the bridge has the name the area.

Surely the toll is just to pay for the maintenance of the bridge, because the bridge would've been paid for or a long time by now.

Same thing here, in Lisbon we have a similar style (possible inspired by this one) bridge, red steel (iron?) and the booths were for paying the bridge. They stand even today, for income to maintenance, so they say...
