The Golden Gate Bridge

Quote:

The first permits were issued in December 1924 -- more than eight years before construction began.

Unlike other Bay Area bridges that are owned by the state, the Golden Gate is owned by a special district run by board members who represent San Francisco, Marin, Sonoma, Napa, Mendocino and Del Norte counties. That explains why tolls are different than they are on other bridges, such as the Bay Bridge.

Some other facts about the bridge are found on the official bridge website:

About 600,000 rivets hold up each tower. The main cables contain more than 80,000 miles of steel wire.
It was the world's longest suspension span until New York City's Verrazano-Narrows Bridge opened in 1964.
How long is it? That depends on where you start measuring. The suspension span is 4,200 feet, making it the world's ninth-longest.

I didn't know they had tolls on the Golden Gate Bridge ... they never show the toll booths in any pictures. Are they on just one side or both sides?

Surely the toll is just to pay for the maintenance of the bridge, because the bridge would've been paid for or a long time by now. :yep:

They were on the southbound lanes on the SF side but they are now all FasTrak electronic collections. It's free to walk or bike across.

I remember seeing a photo from Ansel Adams with the subtitle Golden Gate and thinking, hmmm, it is missing something. Then realized the bridge has the name the area.

Same thing here, in Lisbon we have a similar style (possible inspired by this one) bridge, red steel (iron?) and the booths were for paying the bridge. They stand even today, for income to maintenance, so they say...

The construction of the bridge was also the beginning of the imposition of strict safety rules on construction sites. Joseph Strauss, Chief Engineer for the GG Bridge project was a stickler for safety and, because of it, many lives were saved that might have otherwise been lost; the Golden Gate is a very rugged and hostile place when it came to the idea of building the span; growing up in San Francisco, there were many stories in the press and, later, on TV about the building of the Bridge...
