"Broke"- Something's wrong but it has some use.
"Broke Dick"- Totally useless and a waste of space.

In practical terms, it was the definition of whether you could go home at the end of a work day.

"Hey Chief, the COB says the trim pump is broke.."
"OK, we'll get hot on it tomorrow".
