From the realism mod thread, there seems to be an attribute for mission success bonus, and it varies with difficulty, so how long the campaign goes depends on how successful you are and what difficulty you're playing on.
I finished my first campaign (84, L.A., Casual) after 8-10 missions I believe, because I never failed any (except the final mission, because I didn't know it was the final mission). I also got lucky on mission placement (several missions near Iceland at first, then a couple missions in the Greenland Sea, then a couple missions in the Barents Sea, then an attack on Arkangelsk), so I was able to ambush almost every one because I spent little travel time. I upped the difficulty to Realistic, and things have not gone as well. |

Going to try loosing every mission to see what happens with the campaign.
I wonder if the campaign missions have a 'scorecard' where in the end, your % wins is what determines your ending....

Accomplishing missions nets you campaign/victory points, having started the campaign at a certain value, and once you reach a certain amount, you trigger the final mission.
Losses are equal in worth, and set you back that much, nullifying a victory and pulling you closer to a strategic defeat.
