It was installed in the x86. i uninstalled, reinstalled to the dir you suggested.
loaded 1.4patch. it all looked good, then i ran it and same thing. i went into the properties and switched it to run as admin, rebooted and still wouldn't run.

one thing that was different, before i uninstalled, in the task manager, where you can see the processes that are running, the old install was taking 550K
the new install is taking 489k. i wonder why the 61k diff?

Did you run it at v1.3 after you re-installed? Did it do OK like that? Which directory is your install in now? Are you using the SH4.exe file to start the game? If nothing else, I'd download another copy of the v1.4 patch, and use it instead. Uninstall / reinstall what you have now before you try another patch though...

There's a piece to this puzzle which is missing and hasn't been talked about. If I can just install and use in a foreign operating system with no issues, any version of Windows should be duck soup. Something is seriously wrong in Denmark and we have no way of knowing what it is.

Ubuntu Linux for the Win!

uninstalled, downloaded the 1.4 from here. reinstalled sh4, i have the original disc, when i did the 1.4 patch it said it was upgrading from 1.2 to 1.4.
tried to run, got the grey box with the two blue progressbars, then nothing.

I did not try and run it at 1.2. It is in c:/silenthunterwolvesofthepacific

i don't understand why this is giving me such a hard time.
it used to run just fine on this box.
maybe 1-2 yrs ago. the only major hardware change in that time is a new ssd about a month ago. its got a new install of win7 pro.

thanks for your suggestions everyone.

He had done that earlier above Peter, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to double-check that dirtyape. You need the DirectX v9.0C ~and~ the codec stuff from the install disk. Something is not allowing the v1.4 update to complete it's install. As usual, "Run as administrator...", and be sure that you are using the SH4.exe to start the game, not the GU.exe... Oh, what is your video card and monitor? If it's an LCD monitor, do you have the video card set to match the monitor's "Native Resolution"? Though I doubt if that would kick the interface out... Does v1.2 run prior to trying to install the v1.4? Don't play it, just see if you can get to the opening menu and then exit.
