SH4 won't run

I have a Win7 box that sh4 has run on previously. I have patched sh4 to 1.4 and when i start it i get the grey window with the two blue bars, that disappears and then nothing happens.

I go to the task mgr and sh4exe is in there running but it isn't.

Any ideas?

Steam Conversion SH4 Installation Instructions By ValoWay

Run your SH4.exe as an administrator.
It is adviseable to patch to v1.5 containing the U-Boat Missions
Check that you have the game version Direct X installed
Check that your drivers are up to date.

... especially that... v9.0c that comes on the disk. It will not overwrite the newer versions in Win7, only add to what's there. No need to install the online stuff either, and if using a Windows short-cut to start it, do not point to or use GU.exe to start the game, SH4.exe only...

i reinstalled dx9 just to make sure it was installed. same thing. get the grey box with the two blue bars, that goes away then nothing.

in task mgr, i see silent hunter in processes but it is not doing anything.
i messed around with putting it into xp sp2 and sp3 compatibility mode, i didnt have to do that before, but it had no effect.

I want to start modding, but if i cant even get it to run, is there any point to messing with mods?

Hi da
Ok, so its not a Direct x problem so it looks like a GPU setting problem.
Your GPU control layout maybe different but the principal of the changes needed are the same.

SH4 with Windows 10 should not be a problem and needing a compatibility mode.
It is however important to run your applications (any that has a .exe) as administrators, this does make a big difference to the stability when loading the game.
Also make sure your game is not installed in the Program File (x86) directory as this has restrictions.

thank you for the suggestion about my video card settings, but my nvidia settings were already on the suggested settings.

Is the 1.5 patch the way to go?

propbeanie 02-27-17 06:41 AM

If you're planning on using much modding, yes v1.5 is the way to go, since probably 95% of the mods use it. Even still though, v1.4 should run OK on your machine. I'm going to guess that you have the game installed in your Program Files (x86) folder, and that may be what's causing your trouble. Go ahead an uninstall the game. When you re-install and the dialog comes up about where you want to install it to, if you can, just edit the line there to where it says C:\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific, or whatever you want, just NOT in the Program Files directories, or the Root itself (nor the Windows folder...). Then try the patch. Your computer might be locked-down tight, and that's preventing the full activation of the v1.4 patch. If it still does it after a re-install, check your patch file itself, and try downloading it again and re-applying it.

It was installed in the x86. i uninstalled, reinstalled to the dir you suggested.
loaded 1.4patch. it all looked good, then i ran it and same thing. i went into the properties and switched it to run as admin, rebooted and still wouldn't run.

one thing that was different, before i uninstalled, in the task manager, where you can see the processes that are running, the old install was taking 550K
the new install is taking 489k. i wonder why the 61k diff?

propbeanie 02-28-17 07:48 AM

Did you run it at v1.3 after you re-installed? Did it do OK like that? Which directory is your install in now? Are you using the SH4.exe file to start the game? If nothing else, I'd download another copy of the v1.4 patch, and use it instead. Uninstall / reinstall what you have now before you try another patch though...

There's a piece to this puzzle which is missing and hasn't been talked about. If I can just install and use in a foreign operating system with no issues, any version of Windows should be duck soup. Something is seriously wrong in Denmark and we have no way of knowing what it is.

uninstalled, downloaded the 1.4 from here. reinstalled sh4, i have the original disc, when i did the 1.4 patch it said it was upgrading from 1.2 to 1.4.
tried to run, got the grey box with the two blue progressbars, then nothing.

I did not try and run it at 1.2. It is in c:/silenthunterwolvesofthepacific

i don't understand why this is giving me such a hard time.
it used to run just fine on this box.
maybe 1-2 yrs ago. the only major hardware change in that time is a new ssd about a month ago. its got a new install of win7 pro.

thanks for your suggestions everyone.
