This clip is of Janis Joplin performing at The Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, a festival that also saw the emergence of The Who and Jimi Hendrix as major international stars. Janis was then still part of Big Brother And The Holding Company, a band not really up to her great talent and a band she would soon leave. You may note the pantsuit Janis is wearing: the band had performed earlier in the multi-day festival and Janis had blown away not only the audience, but, also, the other more established acts on the bill. Unfortunately, their first performance was not filmed (they were, apparently, not big enough an act to warrant the expenditure of film), but the response to Janis's performance was so strong, the band was invited to perform again with the performance to be filmed for an eventual documentary of the festival. Among many personal afflictions, Janis suffered from rather low self-esteem born of rather cruel treatment at the hands of others during her early youth, and, when she heard of the new invitation, she wanted to make the best impression possible, so she went out an bought a new outfit for her performance rather than wear the usual hippie garb of the day. What you see here is a very lonely, insecure young woman blessed with great talent making her plea to be accepted by a world she felt would never see her as good enough. This is a performance of someone singing the blues by a person who lived the blues...
Janis Joplin (with Big Brother And The Holding Company) -- Ball And Chain As an example of Janis and the band in a more normal situation, here is a concert filmed for the local San Francisco educational TV (pre-PBS) station KQED. I remember when I first saw this performance, I noted how, during Hall of the Mountain King, one of the guitarists, in order to achieve a special effect at the end of the song, bounced the spring reverb unit on the stage floor: <O>

![]() That movie is where I first heard that song and didn't know it was on an album or soundtrack. I think that's where most first heard it too. It's a great song. Thanks by the way for the links to the other great tunes you posted. |
