They could have just escorted the boats out of Irans waters and show them which way to the carrier.
The again, never hurts to take a peak at what the adversary has. And those US navy personel they held, I'd take them for a free night at one luxury hotel in Iran, aggressive marketing

They did what most any nation would have done I'd say. Take a peek at the gear and let the crew go and return the vessels. These riverine boats are not particularly fancy nothing even a fairly poor navy couldn't afford.

Had they been a more valuable Iran would probably have kept them longer. Of course in this case it was obvious that the boats had not entered Iranian waters on purpose. For this reason they played ball.
