Netflix suggested a show called The Winds of War and the name caught my attention, remembered a book or something, never did read it.I sat down to watch it and man, what a great show. Just finished it, definitely a marathon binge watch that has kept me up too late past few nights.Apparently this show aired in 1983.Those that have watched it, opinions? Anyone read the book(s) ? Going to watch the sequel next, looking forward to it. Always liked Robert Mitchum, definitely was a top notch actor.

Great book and great miniseries by Herman Wouk who also wrote the Caine Mutiny , also one of my favorite movies; and is still alive in New York at the ripe old age of 99! Herman Wouk himself wrote the teleply for the series and had considerable influence on the production itself, and gave detailed instructions on what and how many commercials would be allowed. Wouk also has a cameo appearance as the archbishop of Siena.

Excellent books, excellent series. The sequel, War and Remembrance, is equally good. The downside is that you have to accept that members of this one family manage to be at every single important part of the war. You also have to ignore that Robert Mitchum is far to old for the role of 'Pug' Henry, as well as being too tall for the part of a man whose main driving force in life is his short stature.
I say "excellent" and then complain? The complaints I listed are my only ones. Overall both shows are well worth watching. ![]()

Sounds interesting. Might give it a watch if Netflix ever gets to Australia.

If you liked the first two books, then you guys may want to check out his follow up series: THE HOPE and THE GLORY.
These books follow the foundation of modern Israel and the myriad of wars with her Middle Eastern neighbors since that time. Very interesting insight into the politics and military problems its faced over the years through the eyes of its citizens. Similar in style to Winds of War.
