I have noticed on rare occasion with large convoys that once in a while the entire convoy will get into a tangle. I don't know if I caught them in the middle of a course change or what, but they will get themselves in such a tangle that many ships come to a stop. I love cruising around inside such messes, shooting as I go.

From what I have read, historically that was not uncommon in the early war years. Merchant seamen in peacetime are used to sailing from one place to another, not maneuvering in formation. There is a military term for the result of a submarine contact on an untrained, unprepared convoy.
