The real question is, do you prefer long range patrols to far flung areas, or small to mid range patrols in areas not so far flung?

The boat type is irrelevant, its what you intend to do - that is the real question, because your intent dictates what is the best tool (boat) for the job.

I like to use the VIIC most of the time, especially for a quick attack on a convoy or task group or the occasional harbor raid. Though, to be honest, I always try to get transferred to a type IX around late '41 so I can partake in Paukenschlag. Shelling Whaling ships and tankers in the Caribbean is always a blast (no pun intended)

The gap is closing.
Hope BDU can get enough IXs built to go around.

I´ve had most interesting patrols "escorting" northbound convoys from Freetown in a IX. Two weeks of daily attacks

They both have advantages the VIIC is more maneuverable and dives faster but has relatively weak armour, the IXC is stronger and has a larger load-out but suffers from its large size and k believe it has a longer range
In WWII the IX U-Boat was strongly disliked by their crews they called it a Pig most Captains kept their VIIC boats

Default Type IXC

Just finished my seventh patrol on Dec 22nd1940 and thought id upgrade to a IXC from my old type IXB, U-111. Got U-66 which has a nice paint job, two spare torps have been movedforward and the crew get a guard rail along either side. Lovely. I have lost my 37mm heavy flak and I've only got one 20mm position. Which I had to upgrade to a zwilling... The Caribbean better be full of Large Tankers.

I always use a Type II, but have used a Type VII on occasion. I've never even been a Type IX so I'll have to say; VIIC.

I always liked the look of they type 7, but I usually upgrade to the type 9 when available, because I like having more torpedos, and tubes to fire them with...

I defo prefer the Type IX, Its a good choice ESPECIALLY if you're one of those who insists on manual torpedo targeting (more "fish" to fire)

I will say though that most overlook that the type IX had two purposes to its extremely long ranged design, one was indeed striking at far off targets (such as the Caribbean) the other was to be a "convoy killer", basically it was also designed to be able to stalk and repeatedly attack the same convoy "night after night" hence the large torpedo stores.

Having sailed in all of them apart from the new ones added in gwx and the type XXI im going to be different and say a type IXB. My reasons being that the IXB still has the same amount of torpedoes as a IXC but a faster dive time. It has a shorter range though which for some is major drawback. With the metox detector rigged and the quadruple barelled 20mm AA gun plus two other 20mm guns its an more effective defence against aircraft both through evasion and stand up and fight scenarios. I know this isnt an answer to your original post so I would have the VIIC out of the two boats. The dive time in a IXC is dangerously slow

In my opinion, IXC is much better coz of bigger range and 22 torpedoes instead of 14. But, in other hand, BdU will send you to patrol grids which are far away from your home port, and that will make your patrols long and a bit boring.

As a toss up between the type 7 or 9? Well I guess the type 9. Yeah I have to go with that. The type 9 hunted of the eastern cost at a location area called torpeido ally, also used to drop off spys from around that cost including Cannada. Very much a all pourpose boat. The type 7 has its pourpose too, it is a nice medium range attack boat, better handling, best one to use sneeking around shallow waters off locations too far for a type 2 thats for sure.

But I am a big boat kind of guy, and a type 9 has my name all over it!!!
So type 9 for me..
