First of all, Milkman, and anyone else who has been in the US military: Thank you for your service. I was never qualified to wear the uniform (my screen name has a LOT of meanings

), and I am grateful to all of you who have.
As far as the creaks and groans are concerned, I don't know how much you can infer about a Gato from a modern boat. The only evidence I know of is negative: Hull noise is hardly ever mentioned in the contemporary accounts. I seem to recall a comment in Dick O'Kane's account of taking Tang to way below proof depth in a test dive, but that was an exceptional situation. Since other sounds (and smells!) are covered at length in the first-person accounts, we can speculate that there wasn't a lot of creaking, unlike the sound track in SH345.
Does anyone have any better information on this subject? If the creaking is all just some game designer's skull noise, it would be easy to tone it down or eliminate it entirely.
