Early 1940 on my way to my patrol grid just north of the Cape Verde Islands I got a radio report of a large convoy nearby which I was able to intercept quite easily. To my surprise no escorts are present. So I set up a night attack to start sinking some merchants. I used a few torpedoes to sink some of the larger ships then decided to use the deck gun to pick off some of the smaller ships. Little did I know that there were a couple of merchants that were heavily armed (Q Ships)! After a close shave with those two, I am now going to set up a daylight submerged approach to try and dispatch the Q ships then surface and finish off the convoy. If successful it will be the first time in all the years I have played SH3 that I have managed to sink a whole convoy.

Same thing for me off Freetown after a quick resupply at Dakar; Even the Liberties were not armed as I approached submerged at night with a very full moon("that damn Moon"!). I surfaced and laid on with eels and deck gun. Unfortunately the "Winston Special" 5 Rawalpindi troopships showed up right after and I was now totally useless against the mission target.

I guess I haven't been so lucky - the last convoy I encountered in June 1940, heading West half way between Brest and the Southern coast of Ireland had four destroyer escorts plus a fifth that I didn't see coming - the result: instant death for myself and 48 good men.

To my mind a Q-ship was a merchant vessel that hid it's armament in an attempt to lure a U-Boat or submarine to the surface by looking the helpless victim. At which point the pretense was dropped, the batteries unmasked, and the guns opened fire.
As for armed merchantmen openly displaying guns, they were pretty much standard in Allied convoys by 1942-45. |

Yep it's GWX with the Q ship mod installed. Those ships can certainly catch you off guard when they are inside a convoy.
