Christmas Shopping to the extreme.

When I shop it is a mission. I know the target. I get in. Get the target. Pay and get out. My wife is a browser. There is no particular target. She window shops. I find a bench and people watch while she shops. Come get me when your finished.

I shop like a dude. I like to know what I want and where it is, get in, get it, and get out. I *hate* clothes shopping because it almost always involves a lot of browsing through store after store, the endless lugging of stuff into fitting rooms only to find out that it doesn't fit or I don't like it on me - ugh.

Regarding the "holding the purse" thing, lol, my dad had an interesting take on that. When I was growing up and in my 20s still living at home my mom would often want to go shopping for a few hours when we all went out to eat or just for... I dunno, fun?

Since she usually drove due to my dad's medical condition, he didn't have a whole lot of say in the matter, lol. So we would end up in some mall and I can remember going into to try on dresses in some ladies' shop and my dad would always hold my purse.

But he wouldn't just "hold my purse," he would put it under his arm (I carried little clutch bags back then) just like a lady would, and then browse around in the displays near the fitting room like he was shopping for something. Picture it: a 60ish, 6'4" tall, ~200 lb former Charles Atlas bodybuilder, holding a little zebra print clutch bag under one arm, browsing through the clothes racks at a ladies' dress shop, like there was nothing at all unusual about it. I never knew he did that until I came out of the fitting room unexpectedly one time and caught him. He knew what a sight he was too, and was totally doing it on purpose. But that was Dad - you had to love him. Something most men consider a horrible chore, he turned into a private joke being played on anyone else who wandered into the shop.

Gotta love a man with a good sense of self humor, although, if he were mock-shopping in some of the placees around Los Angeles, some clerk would probably ask him if he'd like to try something on...

I'm also of the"I know what I want, I know where it is, and that's all that I want" school of shopping. My secnd ex (she of the "should have just bought at the first place" school) would sometimes go with me when I would buy something and she would seem to get positively flumoxed by my rapid purcahses. It was as if you took a drug addict to a pharmacy and just went in and out of the place: "Are you sure you don't want to, you know, look around a little? There seems to be lot of stuff here...c'mon, just a little bit of browsing?" I would sometimes laugh at how she would seem to fall into a mini-depression over going to a store for only a couple of minutes instead of for hours. It was almost as if Sheldon could only knock once...

Sadly this man apparently saw no other way out, which could be an indicator of ongoing and overpowering mental abuse at the hands of his girlfriend.

Nobody leaps from the 7th floor of a shopping mall because their girlfriend is a bitch today... they leap from the 7th floor of a shopping mall because their girlfriend has been an abusive bitch for months if not years and they have closed off almost every other aspect of their social lives just to try and satisfy this person.

Im sure this was just the straw that broke the camel's back so to speak.

I have to say though I have had some wonderful fun out shopping for the day, but this is when I go with a friend or my sister for instance and it is more about the company and enjoying the day than shopping. Yes we go in a lot of shops and buy things and generally wear ourselves out, but the thing is we are not "under the gun" with a list of things we must find, we are just out having a good time together. Of course this often also involves a lunch with a few cocktails being served at our table which tends to make the afternoon's browsing even more enjoyable.

My sister freely admits to being a "typical" female shopper. In '98 I was visiting, and told her I was going to a very large comic shop. She offered to drive so we took her SUV. I will "browse" the cheap T-shirt aisle to see if they have any cool new ones I want, but that takes an extra five minutes. If my shoes are dying I know where to buy another pair just like them. I don't even go to the nearby grocery store unless I'm absolutely out of everything. No milk? A bowl of chili will do for breakfast until it's gone too.

Way way back when I was married I was more than willing to do "couple" things with my wife. I like going shopping with her, mainly because we were both young and I liked to see how she looked in different things. On the other hand we were almost exactly the same height and build (except for the man/woman bits), so one Christmas I walked into the JC Penney next to where I worked and started holding up womens' pants and tops to myself to determine if they would fit her. I got some funny looks, but I figured if I tried to explain they wouldn't believe me anyway, so I just kept my mouth shut. She thought it was pretty funny when I told her how I picked things out after we had opened everything.

And that's where guys are generally luckier than women. What many of you may not realize when it comes to shopping for women's clothes is that there is basically NO standardization when it comes to sizes. A size 8 in one brand may fit whereas the same size in another brand is too large or too small. Even with the same brands, I might wear one size in one style and a different size in another. It's not like we can walk into a place and look for a label that says "waist XX, inseam XX" and know that it will fit just fine. For anything more complicated than a t-shirt and socks, we almost have to try something on to know if it will fit properly.

If I need jeans, I will grit my teeth and go somewhere and find 2-3 styles that look promising, and then look for each of them in 3, maybe 4 different sizes going up and down from what looks like - based on holding them up to me - might be the best fit. Then I lug as many pairs as possible (or as many as they'll allow) into the fitting room and start trying them on. Once I find a style/size combo or two that I like and that actually fits, I'll go back out and find a couple pair in blue, a couple in black, whatever I think I'll need. I might buy 5-6 pairs at a time if I can find that many of the kind and size I've decided on. Then it might be a couple years at least before I have to shop for them again.

Same goes for any "basic" clothing item, if I find a pair of work shoes I like I'll buy 2-3 pair so I don't have to go looking again in six or nine months or whenever the first pair wears out.

And don't even get me started on shopping for a bra.
