External torpedo loading - preferably night time, airplane free area, first a hydrophone check for surface traffic. Still it's risky, but VonHarris once survived meeting a destroyer while moving the external torpedo in. His reaction was to sink the intruder with deck gun fire and a surface torpedo shot. That's the aggressive U-boat spirit

Heh... I also tried to use my deck gun but my crew barely had time to turn the gun around before they were blown clean off the deck. :/

I dont have the hsie mod yet, but I have always "modeled" this by taking 4 minutes on the surface (for the crew to unchain the thing) before crash diving, and then counting that torpedo as lost over the side.
No idea if that is realistic, but.. Also, I never move externals except in calm seas, at night, moving max at 1 knot just to maintain headway.

Thats a large part of what the AA guns were for IIRC, was if you got caught on the surface when you couldnt dive (charging batteries, reloading torpedos, etc)

One of my luckiest - if not the luckiest - moments in SH3. I have also been attacked by aircraft while reloading externals and had to abandon to my home base after the plane completed its attack run. |

Could swear though, that you could dive and it'd just halt the loading

When you press "D" to dive or "C" to crash dive a random variable is applied dealying the dive from 1 to 15 minutes, IIRC. For all that time you are on surface cursing your luck and struggling to survive. After mid 1942 it usually doesn't end well. |
