Default Luftfahrtmuseum Hannover-Laatzen 9 Aug 13

I've come across another little gem of a museum, this one about 10 mins from Hannover airport. Luftfahrtmuseum Hannover-Laatzen (Hannover Laatzen aviation museum) has about 30 aircraft which tells the tale of German aviation. There are also models of just about every German aircraft you can imagine and a load of other exhibits such as engines, uniforms and an 88mm flak.

It was originally set up by the owner of a local haulage firm and is still privately owned and the owner took part in an expedition to recover four Ju52 which had sunk in a Norwegian lake during WW2 when the ice melted - one of these was restored to pristine condition with the remainder either being cannibalised to create the pristine one or exhibited as parts.

The first aircraft are WW1 era:

BEEEP! BEEP! PEDANT ALERT!

It was called the D.VII, not the Dr.VII. The Dr. designation was for triplanes only.

The 109G2 they have has been recoverd from the Mediterranean sea in the 80ies. It has been restored to pristine condition as well (even on the inside, I was once lucky enough to take a seat in it).

I got talking to a guy who I think is one of the curators (my German is passable at best but his English was very good) and he explained that the guy who set the museum up made a lot of money from his haulage firm and invested it in his museum. He retired when he reached 65 and spent a lot of his time working on these projects but unfortunately he died two years ago. Fortunately the museum survives.

There are only three WW2 aircraft in the collection, but I think they are good choices:

All three aircraft are restored originals - the Spitfire is the only Mark XIV in a German museum, the Bf109 was recovered (as Schroeder as said) from the Med in 1988 and the Fw190 is the first original restoration of this type in a German museum.
