I must admit there is one thing that does concern me a little, and perhaps I am a little biased because I'm not exactly slim (although I would definitely not consider using an electric scooter...unless perhaps it had wheel spikes and a TOW launcher on it...) but I do see a social tidal change of opinion towards people who are overweight. Now, on one hand I can understand that in a world where resources are finite people are annoyed when other people clog up these resources through their weight problem (in this I'm thinking hospital beds and medical costs) however to a class of people who are in many cases extremely introverted and already disheartened about their appearance such stigma is perhaps the straw that breaks the camels back. It does make me a little worried for a potential future where fat people are treated like criminals, however well intentioned such a path may be.
Of course, there are jerks in every social facet, jerks like the gentleman in Stealheads post who act like the world owes them something, but equally there are people such as those mentioned by razark who struggle with the position they are in and are undeserving of scorn.
The problem lies in tarring everyone of a particular demographic with the same brush, just because of the actions of a minority, and ultimately that is one of the biggest problems we face as a society in this century.

Hey bud, I'm overweight too. I can deal with it. But it's the mindset that an overweight person need some accommodations for their bad choices that disturbs me. Scooter chairs and handicap parking tags should be reserved for those who truly need it. The rest, me included, should soldier on and try to stay active.

Many obese people are not that way by choice. Usually due to some malady of the thyroid gland.
One of my aunts for example.
She was a big woman all her life but, she wasn't lazy by any stretch of the imagination. It wasn't until later in her life, the doctors removed her thyroid and the weight practically fell off her frame. By then it was too late. She had already contracted many of the illnesses that go hand in hand with obesity. Diabetes being the major one. Then the big C. That's when it was finally decided to remove her thyroid gland.
Many a medical woe can be attributed to the thyroid gland since this organ is primarily responsible for regulating your immune system. The immune system takes care of Apoptosis(cell death) Cells that don't die and get purged turn into Cancer. Most illness can be prevented by keeping the thyroid in top condition. To do that, it needs iodine. Much of the processed food we eat today has been stripped of this important nutrient. Iodized salt aids in replenishment but, it's not enough.
If you leave it up to the FDA, you gonna die.
Can you say population control?

Scooter chairs make me see red. I understand that not every handicap is outwardly visible. I understand that someone who is obese may have another medical issue that would require them to use a scooter chair even if they were slim, but I believe that for the most part these things are used by hambeasts just because they're too damn lazy to walk.

I walked into HEB the other day (grocery store) and was stuck waiting behind a man and wife couple, both seriously overweight and both attempting to navigate their scooters out of the charging station. They literally blocked the entire walkway and there was no way around them until they had wheeled their fat butts out of the way.
