If anyone wants to see what the most modern incarnation looks like, here's a video link from Hatfilms (the trio that makes the Minecraft trailers). They have a series on Worms going atm  . Worms is really one of those games that are as fun to watch as they are to play, simply because it's so wacky and skill-based and so much can go wrong. It's also the only game I've ever played where losing is as fun as winning  !
