I'd think someone who demands religion be kept out of his face would eschew invoking deities lest he be seen as a hypocrite.

It's just language, August. I also use the German equivalent to "thank god" when something took a good turn. I don't say that because I believe in a God but simply because I was taught as a small child that this is the right phrase to express my feelings in that situation.

You don't go around demanding that all sign or even mention of religion should be hidden from public view either, and that's the difference.

Before celebrating, I would like to see what will replace him and how different things will be, if anything will actually change. Who knows, the next guy may be worse than the last.
