No-one will probably give a dam about this news but...here goes:

Electronic Arts today announced that popular PC digital download titles from Ubisoft including Assassin’s Creed III, Far Cry 3 and Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Conviction are coming to Origin. Ubisoft titles are available for purchase and download to PC gamers on Origin starting today in North America, with Europe and Asia availability beginning on February 22.

In addition, for the first time EA is bringing top PC downloadable titles to the Uplay shop, Ubisoft’s digital distribution service. Dead Space 3, FIFA Soccer 13, Need for Speed Most Wanted, Mass Effect 3 and The Sims 3 are among the first EA games now available worldwide on the Uplay shop.

Sooo....clever marketing strategy? Or just desperate and hopeless? Teaming up with EA, who is not exactly a respected company in gaming circles, together, competing and rather openly, against Steam.
Good for the consumer? Perhaps. People who give a dam: not many. People who will stick with Valve's Steam: Lots.

Probably a combination of marketing strategy and desperate.

EA games is getting ready to release the newest SimCity. They decided to go with always on DRM. And it goes beyond that. Even if it didn't have the DRM, you still will need to have a full time internet connection to play. My computer is well beyond the "recommended specs," but it had trouble running the "beta" simulation with the video settings on high. I put beta in quotes because it was more of a one hour long demo.
In one of the blogs, there was a small number of us that tried to tell the developers that the internet connection is a bad idea, yet they insisted on keeping it. On Facebook, I made it a point to mention this and other problems as much as I could. I managed to get a few other people speaking up, and made a few others mad. Mostly, the sheeple kept praising EA games, thinking everything will be great.

I'm not getting it, but to be honest, I hope I'm wrong. I liked the SimCity series and would like to get this one.

Screw all this digital distribution mess.

The windows store has no titles, but has obviously the best client.

Steam has a lot of titles, but is obviously missing a few major chunks (EA for instance), and the store client is pretty bad (its simply a browser shell)

Origin and uplay (now one store) lacks too many titles!

And than there is the sony store and xbox marketplace, but they are only for their respective consoles.

You see, I ran down the publishers of my games earlier, and truth is, the games I play comes from too many publishers across too many platforms.

The publishers include that I bought games from (starting from the beginning of 2012 to today, I bought too many from some publishers to name, including free to play):
EA (Mass effect, Kingdoms of Amalur, Medal of Honor, EA sports, Crysis, etc.)
Sony (MLB the show, LittleBigPlanet, Uncharted, Unit 13, Wipeout, gravity rush etc.)
Activision (Call of Duty, The walking dead, Prototype)
Capcom (Devil May Cry, Street Fighter)
Ubisoft (Far Cry, Ghost Recon, Assassins creed, Rayman, Lumines, etc)
Eidos/Square Enix (Hitman, sleeping dogs)
Paradox (Crusader kings, Victoria, War of the roses)
Sega (Total War, Yakuza, Binary Domain)
Rockstar (Max Payne)
Valve (counterstrike: global offensive)
Koei (dynasty warriors)
THQ (Darksiders, WWE)
Konami (metal gear)

You see, I truly hope for 1 digital distribution platform that has everything, but that is never going to happen...

So I juggle steam, origin, uplay, playstation network, xbox live, and it covers most of my gaming needs, but goddamnit, there has to be a better way for this...

It appears that these publishers are setting up for Winblows 8 and cloud delivery of content. If you're a solo gamer living in a place without constant internet, you're just SOL.
The pirate paranoia they suffer is becoming terminal.
I'm a firm believer in these publishers getting what's due them, but this communistic leash strategy isn't the way to go because it's going to alienate those gamers who lack a permanent connection to the web.
Not to mention those of us who prefer having a hard copy on hand in case of catastrophic HDD and OS failures.

Since quite some time I consider it to be a relief and liberation to have lost interest in wide-spread, diverse gaming myself. Yes, I still play, but the wild hey-days when i spend a fortune on new games and spend different titles by the dozens, are gone and over. And when I see how things are going, I am glad they are over.

Sky, there is still hope for us gamers.
My observations are that indie studios blossom more and more - backed by a usually mature and willing-to-pay community.

Some more or less successful examples out of my head:

- Minecraft
- Amnesia
- Prison Architect
- Paranormal
- Kerbal Space Program
- Plants vs. Zombies
- Deadlight
- Hotline Miami

etc.

I own all of the above except Deadlight and Hotline Miami and love those games to death, never regret the few dollars I spend on them compared to the ridiculously overpriced rail-shooter AAA titles that come unfinished and leave you dissappointed and poor.

I also know you play the Hunter quite enhusiastically which is just another example, even if this title can be quite expensive... and so friggin addicting.

Just ignore the big studios from EA over Ubi to SEGA and continue enjoying games how they were meant to be: Made with passion, heart and supported long after release.

I can also recommend pages like GOG.com to dig our old pearls from better times, polished to run on modern OS - but I imagine you know about this.

Now EA and Ubisoft want me to have to keep track of all my games and logins across multiple platforms and desk drawers and files.

If it ain't on Steam, I ain't buyin. Never played Mass Effect 3 for that very reason.

I have
101 games on steam, yeah 101.

I like everything centralized, the only non steam game I have bought in the last 3 years was Starcraft 2.

Same here. I have no shame in saying that I love Steam. It's all there, all the time. Your machine melts down? It's all right there for you. Lose your product key? No you didn't; it's in there too. Buy, install, you're playing within minutes.

I don't remember how my hobby survived without it.
