I read this post the other day and started to check my Optical Targeting Correction for the stock SH4 1.4 version (it's been a while since I've loaded it up). I found Carrollsue's problem with the deck gun. Fixing it took me a couple of days, really was a hard one to figure out. As Carrollsue stated, the gun wouldn't fire at the correct angle when the elevation was set to the correct range. This occurred in the default deck gun position, and the two zoomed positions of the station. The gun required a huge amount of elevation over what it should have. I have a patch now ready for release correcting this issue.
I should point out a couple of things regarding the deck gun. When at the default position (seated at the gun, looking over the subs deck), the crosshair will still need to be elevated slightly above the target at distances greater than 1000 yards. At 1000 yards or less, centering the crosshair on the target will strike where pointed. At distances greater, you'll need to raise the crosshair accordingly to compensate for the increase in range. When in one of the zoomed views you can use the range dial to adjust the elevation (as expected) and hit the target where needed. Keep in mind the range gleaned from a Sonar ping, Map measurement, Stadimeter reading, reads the range at the center of the target, at water level. If you want to fire at the hull, below water level, you'll need to decrease the range dial slightly from the found range. If you want to pick off the planes on a carrier's flight deck (it's cool to see them explode!), increase the found range a bit. Adjustments are expected (don't forget the subs rocking motion, depending on the sea state will cause some shots to go off target), but the basic system now works as it should. ============ One other thing I added to the patch was how the anti-aircraft ammunition worked. Even though the stock game files dealt with the AA in a special way, the result's in-game proved to be nothing at all. With a little trial and error I've gotten the AA ammunition to preform as flack gun ammunition, firing a burst of shrapnel at a predetermined range in flight. Below are a few images I took while using a single barrel Oerlikon: ![]() ![]() ![]() This should spice up your anti-aircraft protection!! OTC offers the use of AA ammunition for all surface weapons, including the deck gun. Check out the specs while in-port for the gun's installed on your boat. The "OTC 1.4 Patch_1" can be found HERE, under the the SH4 "Gameplay mods" section of the "Downloads" menu. The patch is not required, nor made compatible, for the "Optical Targeting Correction for RFB 1.4".
