I am, and have been for a long time, a big fan of Samuel Eliot Morison. That said, historians are people, and people make mistakes. I also know that Morison served through the war with the U.S. Navy, and as indicated probably did have hard feelings about that defeat. That doesn't excuse some of the things he said in his work, which is considered the official definitive history of the American involvement of the Pacific War.

It sounds like current research proves beyond a doubt that Morison was wrong on this. Mr Geddes and his friends deserve to have their story corrected in American history.

Another correction: he wasn't actually the pilot, he was the radioman/gunner. Still, I wasn't aware of this story. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.
