They had such a short range under their own power meaning they were usually towed to the vicinity of their targets by a mother vessel (submarine) and the crew would rotate from towere to towed to benefit from as much rest as possible.

Makes my TypeII look pretty spacious!

I know its a cliche but to say it was a different world at that time is such an understatement! Countless acts of pure bravery with amazing innovation and improvisation to try to get the upper hand.

Shame those midget subs are rusting away like that, but I suppose realistically we can't preserve everything.
