If the shipping company contacted the manufacturer and they said don't deliver it - why did they send it in the first place?

Often in these kinds of cases, so the goods are sent to various parties, and then becomes more difficult to track.

Best guess I have is that they were not aware that it was residential address - make it look like something related to university for example. It wasn't local company after all and I don't think they have time (or interest) to check every address from Google StreeView.
