The real issue is the SS keeping it in their pants.

Wasn't it Nancy Reagan who showed up uninvited at the White House a couple of days atfter the 1980 election with her interior designer to start redecorating? As I recall, Mrs. Carter was neither pleased nor welcoming to Mrs. Gipper since there hadn't even been an inauguration yet...

Not any more

It used to be that former Presidents got protection for the rest of their life.

PL 89-186 (1965) authorized the USSS to provide protection to former presidents and their spouse for the rest of their life, if they requested it.

PL 103-329 (1997) changed this to limit the authorization for USSS protection to 10 years.

President Bill Clinton may be the last president with lifetime USSS protection. If Hillary Clinton becomes president, she would continue her lifetime protection under the auspices of being a spouse of a former president who served prior to 1 Jan 97.

However, any person under USSS protection can petition the government for extended protection.

Former Vice Presidents are authorized 6 months USSS protection. Vice President Chaney petitioned for an extension and President Obama approved it.

Sort of like Nixon's last flight.

Took off from DC as Air Force One and landed in California as SAM-27000.

Status can change quickly.

seems i read that somewhere.

so Obama will have to hire and fund his own protection after his next term.

of course considering the dollar will have been devalued 4 times over by then, he should have no trouble finding help

Obama won't have to worry once he's out and returns to Kenya. He'll have all the help he needs when he's back home. His grandma says so.

Yeah, you'd never catch Romney doing that...

(Ok, so Romney didn't create it, he just grabbed that ball and pasted it onto his website.)

Damn that's just sad. What a cheesy thing to do.

But see what Obama started? Another government office has been created with blessings from both parties. I'll bet it'll have a staff and a budget before long. In a few years we'll read about drunken managerial bashes in Vegas costing the taxpayer millions.

While Obama was the first to use the phrase "Office of the President-Elect), that office has been in existence since 1963.

PL 88-277 (1963) The Presidential Transaction Act of 1963 authorizes *an* office for the President and Vice President with staff and budget.

Not will have, has had for 48 years. It has had a staff and budget since 1964 (when the act went in to effect)

Presidential Transitions Effectiveness Act of 1998 allows private funds to be used to help defray the costs of the President-Elect expenses. To handle the integration of these private funds, the President Elect formed a 501(c)4 non profit organization. In Obama's case this NPO was called "The Office of the President-Elect". A presumptive title, but hardly illegal or, when you think about it, inappropriate.

After President Obama was elected one of the first things he did was that.

Actually, the Secret Service protects:

Quote:
Former presidents and their spouses for their lifetimes, except when the spouse remarries. In 1997, Congressional legislation became effective limiting Secret Service protection to former presidents for a period of not more than 10 years from the date the former president leaves office.
