And in other news, Russian submarine sails to Gulf of Mexico without catching on fire or having the reactor meltdown.

It would be really embarrassing if it was one of these:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfa_class_submarine

Which one is noiser: USS Nautilus or a Lira Class?

From the "news" it was a 971 'Bars' class sub, appx. as silent as an LA class sub or so they say.

Regarding which is noisier, the 571 or a 705 'Lira' - at which speed ?
The Alfa with its 45 knots would just outrun a contemporary Nautilus torpedo - wasn't that the reason why the Mk48 was developed (?)

Anyway russian subs meanwhile take part in NATO maneuvers, and lie cheek to cheek to Nato boats in internationsl harbours.
Also american subs have filmed russian prototypes near their harbours violating russian territorial limits for decades, so what's the big deal now ?
To be honest I would be more afraid of the Mafia than of the Russians lol

Greetings,
Catfish

Not that i've ever heard, but I wonder if they did whether either side would admit it publicly.

Ever since the Walker scandal, I wonder if they messed with it?

Why are people assuming that the US navy was unaware of this submarine?

Because a story "leaked" to the press says so?

Think about it for a moment. Who benefits from this "story"?

Russian submarines go into U.S. ports all the time. When I was living at Bangor Base they would come in all the time.

The U.S. doesn't give a rats ass if they're in U.S. waters. The U.S. play cat and mouse with them all the time. The U.S. has SSBN's in their waters too.
