In the current geo-political climate, does the USN find it necessary to trail every Russian attack sub out of port? Because that's the only way I see this as being a potential embarrassment at all. And my guess is that we don't feel the need to track them all the time.

So the Russians had a patrol in the Gulf. We patrol in the Barrents all the time.

And if you read the rebuttal story on the front page, you'll see why it seemingly is not a big issue.

From what I gathered, it was an alarmist story from a questionable news source.

I don't expect them to track every Russian boat all the time, but when it sits on your doorstep for a month undetected, I wouldn't think it would be too much to ask the Defense Dept to do a better job of watching them, especially that close to home.

Didn't the russian navy even partake in NATO exercises ? Should we fire NATO's high brass ?

Apart from that we all know the US does that and worse since the cold war, from photographing russian subs in their home bases to following experimental russian subs photographing them while sailing rings around them.
Sure, after the Volvo-Toshiba thingie the Russians are now able to build better/stealthier subs, but this article is so blown out of proportion lol

I think they should just sail into New York harbour, pop the hatch and say "privet" if just for laughs.

I can't help but believe this was a behind the scenes agreed test of some kind. From what I remember the American Navy could not detect the Gotland Submarine either.

Gotlands and Akulas or any SSNs do not compare, noise-wise. ;) Gotlands and the Type-212 family of boats probably are the most silent boats currently in service. Akulas are nuclear, Gotlands base on AIP-Sterling engines, 212s base on synchronous electric motors with fuel cells.

The main reason for the noise on a nuclear sub are the cooling pumps ?

From a certain speed on (appropriate water intakes assumed) a nuclear submarine should not need its active water pumps, and the project 971 Bars has two inlets slightly ahead/below of the reactor compartment.

Is there even an IUSS/Sosus in the mexican gulf ? I take it is not so easy anymore, to find and trail a russian sub of the recent generation.

And aren't very good choices for forward blue water deployment. They are relatively silent, but are also slow, limited in range and of shallower diving depth than nukes. As in all things, there are tradeoffs. A Type 212 is not a boat that you would send to patrol the Gulf of Mexico.

So you find a Russian sub in the gulf, big deal. I came to Bodø on saturday and saw the destroyer Admiral Chabanonko docked in the harbor. There was Russian sailors everywhere. I last saw the Chabanenko here in Bodø in may docked alongside KNM Fridtjof Nansen.

On a side note, has Russia ever messed around with our SOSUS lines?
