Where does this make the drug seem "fun" or "innocent"? Nazis aren't "fun" and "innocent" either, and yet look how much comedy has been produced about them... Including in this forum.

This is irreverent comedy. The author very directly claims that it is irreverent comedy, and duly warns for and even apologizes for possible offense. It is very politically incorrect and offensive - of course it is! So is all irreverent humor, by definition. It's the kind of thing you'd see on South Park. This type of over-the-top, ridiculous, completely unrealistic parody content has always been part of the culture here on Subsim. I don't think political correctness is a reason to clamp down on it.

I do have some reservations about the wording, both the use of the word "retarded" in the title and the flagrant swastikas all over the announcement, but other than that, with due warning... this is up to people's discretion to try and shouldn't be censored.

Agree with CCIP...we don't 'control' the forums though. Neal prefers we use a soft approach and that IMHO means we only get involved when forum rules are contravened.

As long as name calling and exchanging of insults does not occur and people act with a degree of civility toward each other there shouldn't be any need for moderator involvement.

This community is almost always better than that.

Yup. There is no endorsement of drug use in or associated with this year-old mod. Although the title uses the word cocaine and includes some images, there is no visual or otherwise verbal endorsement of drug use of any kind. Let's stop with the mountains of molehills, okay?

It was never my intention to promote the use of drugs or raise this much controversy about it. In fact, this mod's use of drug-related imagery and the title are largely artifacts now. I use the word "artifact" in the TVTropes manner-

A series title that made perfect sense when it began, but after a number of changes to the premise, no longer makes sense to people who don't go back to the beginning. Sometimes a new element is put in to justify the title.

Sometimes, a character or gimmick seems to no longer fit with the mood or design of a story according to a writer, but is kept because there seems to be no way for the writer to get rid of them without causing some serious disruption (unrelated to Retcons).

For those who have read through the entirety of the confusing readme, this mod was inspired by a Red Alert 3 mod called CnC Retarded- Red Cocaine. I haven't played it in ages but it added a lot of overpowered units and general insanity. SH3R-NC grew out of a desire to apply the same sort of logic to Silent Hunter III.

Does it need all the drug references? No, not really. But they aren't meant to be offensive, they are meant to be humorous. And at this point, at least for me, they're as much a part of the mod as the overpowered torpedoes.

I considered making a "clean" version, but I'm thinking it would inevitably become offensive in other ways. Especially Nazis- although they did many horrible things, it is hard to resist using them as a source of humour.

With all this being said, 2.x Dope (and no, I'm not changing that codename even if the mod title changes), is going to be a lot more modular. Those who want the gameplay tweaks without the possibly offensive humour can simply choose to load only gameplay modules.

I am listening to your concerns, and in 2.x you will be able to choose between this and this.

I'll start off by saying that I'm pro this mod. Kudos to a modder who has taken so much time and effort to produce a fun mod for people to enjoy, and I salute XTChrisTX's response to comments on this thread by releasing a no-holds-barred version for those who want it but also producing a toned down version.

I'll continue by saying that I'm anti the drug references. I'm an adult who has made his own choices about drugs use, but we know that there are minors here on subsim (I remember a number of posts from a guy who was just 12) and subsim would appear to be supporting drugs references to minors.

Irreverent humour has an appropriate age restriction which is enforced through film/TV distributors, vendors, parents or, if necessary, law. This attempts to ensure that drug references are kept away from minors, with reference to cocaine use having an automatic 15 certificate in the UK and PG-13 in the US. Reference to Nazis doesn't hold an automatic certificate.

My personal opinion is that subsim appears to be supporting drug use by its passivity, particularly given the strength of feeling shown by the number of negative comments on this thread.

Everyone appears to support the mod, it's the drug references that have annoyed people.

Silent Hunter 3 - Going Postal Mod
