The British ship I sunk had the name Montebello. I suppose that is exactly what you are talking about. I would think once we find where these names are being pulled from they could be replace with the list we used in SH3.

I can tell you where those names are coming from since my UIs mod (and the stand-alone radio messages mod) takes the names from it: \data\RadioMessages\WWIIShipNames.txt

All versions since SH3 have had names applied to the listing in the Roster file for the ship type, but they didn't work in SH3 or SH4. Dan told me a long time ago that SH5 would indeed give ships names. Of course I was very excited about this, and the only thing keeping me from exploring it further is the sad fact that my computer doesn't run SH5. If that's indeed where the names come from I can edit the files and send them to someone, since I still have it on my PC, even if it doesn't run.

The biggest problem I see right now is the lack of merchant types available. I can do names for the ones that are there, but that's at most a few hundred names, and I have thousands of names for hundreds of different ship types. Still, it could be a start.

Yes that is a start and if you edit the file I would love to have a copy as I sure others would too.

\WWIIShipNames.txt is a simple list of names. I don't know if there is any relationship made with the nationality or the type of ship these names get applied to.

Just for fun below is a screen capture of one days entry into my journal. As you can see I clean out most of the log entries pulled from the message box.
