The "gray" to indicate "this mod has been modified by another mod further on down" also serves to tell you that disabling it may have unpredictable effects. Mods in "black", on the other hand, you can disable at any time no matter where they are in the list (unless other mods depend on them to function, of course).

The safest way to play around with mods, though, is to always disable the last ones first. Last in, first out
