Default Newbie help please?

Hi all, I've spent quite sometime and umpteen attempts at installing this SH3 game, but cannot get it to run
I'm not a computer expert, I know just enough to keep going, so can you go easy on the techno stuff please?

I'm running a laptop i5, 8gig ram, nvidia geforce graphics on Win7 Professional.

I've run the SF removal tool, rebooted.

Followed the guide through step by step, NOT clicked finished, run the v1.4 euro patch. Then clicked finished, but not selected run on the last screen.

Closed everything down, right clicked the game, selected xp compatibility mode, run as admin.

Then tried to run the game. It won't run and shows error about win 95 & xp. (sorry can't remember the rest of it).

I've also changed my resolution down and tried that too as I found that just before I started writing this.

I appreciate this is probably the most simple of things to do, but I'm obviously not that bright

Any help and guidance would be gratefully appreciated, just be gentle

Yes, be patient and one of the computer 'lords' will be along I'm sure.

Personally, I was so nervous about the whole starforce thing that I just bought a new disk without starforce and no worries on my Win7 home desktop.

Check the win7 thread, that may help some. It's around here somewhere

Unfortunately, I can not help with the Starforce issue as I have never dealt with it. Did the game work prior to removing the starforce? Knowing this would help determine if it is a starforce issue or Win 7 issue.

Here is the link to the Win 7 thread:

I ended up re-buying the game online (I think I got it through GOG?) for $10 and it installed under windows 7 with no troubles.

After doing some research I found that Win 7 does not like the starforce program and other people have bought the starforce free edition. I did find the following post by supposetobeworking who got win 7 to work by removing starforce in a little different way from the post in this forum (How to play Silent Hunter III without the DVD in the DVD Drive (Starforce free) and included a ubisoft link.

If this does not work post the error message you are getting.
Good luck

If youhave to uninstall sh3, get one of the several free registry cleaners available at download.com and clean your registry. It might be a problem that is left over from the original installation in the registry causing an issue. Anything like CC Cleaner, TweakNow RegCleaner 2011 , Ect. should work. Just an after thought.

It could be that the game is already patched to 1.4
In which case you have to remove the game, clean out your registry from Ubi an SH3 stuff and reinstal without patching
