with 'My ancient creaky single-core system' i had to use AlacrityPC wich is great by the way - for all creaky single-core systems. it enabled me to shut down something like 90+ back ground programmes, much better than GameBooster but a bit of a bugger to set up and keep stable. yet it freed up my Boat to sail, cant ask much more than that.

@jimbuna. i have both CCLeaner and Malwarebytes used to have RegVac too maybe i'll pop that back on.

Are you saying just W7 speeds up loading?
absolutley! its a new machine. like jimbuna says its about a minute and a half from click to sail...better than my old 10 minutes plus!!....

@ HB i know it will slow down in the end - we all do. but i dont keep a lot of that stuff on my computer. it is mainly email photos and music and a couple of games like CODWAW and Assasins Creed for my son - but thanks for the cheery input
