I used to play with it off, but realized that only an incompetent Chief Engineer wouldn't be able to tell me that we had been hurt bad, and shouldn't dive too deep. Now he wouldn't be so exacting as the percentage they give you, but as there's no alternative, no middle ground, I've begun to leave it on.

The lowest I have recorded in the patrol reports is 38.10%, back from when I was learning to play.

Sounds sensible to me. I don't see how this causes irreparable harm to the notion of 'realism' or gives the player some untoward advantage.

As you say, the CE would have a general idea in this regard, so perhaps the best solution would be to randomize the display (within a certain percentage) to simulate 'actual' conditions.

If you want to know what your HI is simply set the parameters in Commander
