When the AOB has been set up 90 degrees port instead of starboard it means Bernhard has been playing with the dials.
When your sub runs aground because you're navigator has plotted a course straight across an island, Bernhard was on watch. When you're on your shakedown cruise, and running some manual targeting trials, and for some reason a torpedo accidentally leaves it's tube and connects with the Bismark in an orgy of fire and destruction, Bernhard was on the button. When you're playing tag with a destroyer, accidentally order "Return to course" and your once silent sub shudders into life and roars away at ahead standard, it's Bernhard with his foot on the pedal, a dopey grin on his face, whooping and hollering while you're screaming "NO NO NO NO NO... Aww HELL!".

This 'Bernard' you speak of sounds like quite the promising young chap. Perhaps he should be put in charge of his own boat...

He was, briefly. Coincidentally, Wilhelmshavn burned to the ground during the same time period.

Bernard was on the Moltke's fore 11" gun and sank an american merchant on our raid on Halifax on our 8th patrol in late 1940, I then put him on the Moltke's aft turret and ended up sinking a american modern tanker.
