Were you on a mission for the Western Approaches? Because the first mission is generally the 50,000/70,000 on the Eastern side, so sinking ships on the west isn't going to count towards anything really.

Awards and stuff can be done at anytime now from the Crew Page. There's no Captain's Office anymore. You basically just hand out promotion points to increase abilities and give little Iron Cross awards that seem to do nothing.
