Where are you in the campaign? It can be either a depth charge or a Hedgehog bomb.

I'm in about May of 1940. I thought I had about 50 meters to spare last bottom sounding I did, and the depth charges seemed pretty far away (not rocking the boat) then all of the sudden my men started turning red and I got the message and died before I could do anything.

I would say that you struck a mine. 50 meters and May of 1940...you wouldn't by chance, be in or near the English Channel or near Scapa Flow would you?

Specifically I was in the deep area of AN55, about 70 KM NE of Hartlepool.

Pretty sure that would have been a mine. By that time (mid 1940) they laid down a carpet of mines all along the eastern Brittish coast.

MY last encounter with a mine was rather fortunate. Only a large hole in the sub, a missing deck gun and lots of split batteries! (Near Dover, on BdU's orders.)
