I always go for the clean shave option, although that may change as I'm slowly going bald (stupid family genetics...).

I'd say go with whatever you're comfortable with;

Since enjoying (though that is a relative term) the single life of the solitary male, I have not bothered with a razor in over 18 months, apart from running my hair clippers over my face once a fortnight or so.
As they say, it's all in the genetics for some - I'm not particularly hairy, but after a month of not shaving I have a passable beardy thing, more reminiscent of a recent piratical character style than the full on founding fathers thing lol.
Make the best of what you've got and go with it. Or shave it off.
Once you get used to one or the other, it often presents a difficulty making a change either way

EDIT: Has anyone noticed that the ocean warrior avatar looks a bit like cary grant?

@ Anthony:

Justin Bieber approves, so it'll be good enough for you!

And here is a chart for you to decide on your look:

I have had a mustache for about 20 years. My wife will not let me shave it off. It is not troublesome. I have a small electric grooming kit. The mustache does not make me feel distinquished or older. It's just there for lack of a better word. My grandfather sported a mustache. He had one because as a kid a hockey puck left a bad scar after it hitting him under his nose. The mustache covered it nicely.

Chances are that if you currently cant grow much hair for a mustache you never will be able to. I can grow a beard just fine but I can not shave above my lip for a month and it will never get beyond fuzzy caterpillar it was that way when I was 17 it is the same today and I am 34.And my brothers are the same way.

Same goes for hair color I have known guys that had black, brown,or blonde hair but if they tried to grow a mustache the hair there is red your only cure there is to buy the just for men facial hair coloring stuff if you dislike the color.

I'd say don't bother with a stash if you do not like how it naturally looks dying your facial hair is silly at any age. Also some women do not like facial hair at all so keep that in mind.

Honestly if you still have the same hair style that you did in pictures that you have posted in the past I'd stay clean shaven unless you want to look like this guy:

Maybe you are shooting for this look but this SF guy only has the beard to help him mingle with the locals
and he is a bad ass the first thing he does when he gets back to the states is shave that sucker:

The basic rule of thumb is what ever you do have make it look like you give a **** about how it looks in other words keep it groomed and if you cant grow it thick enough
do not bother or if your wife/girlfriend dislikes/likes a certain style well that is that but seeing as Anthony is trying to hook up with some girl he does not know what she likes but
if she is worth the time she will like a guy that confident in himself which has nothing to do with facial hair.

Anthony, you're what, 18? 20? Be patient is the first bit of advice I'd offer. Shoot, it took me about three years after I got out of the Army for my facial hair to look decent. Lenape blood not a help, btw, and while my hair is a sandy brown beginning to grey, my beard & stache come in reddish, with odd bits of blond.

If you're under 23 years old, be patient, shave the caterpillar every few days. It'll grow back in a little darker and fuller over time.

I still argue that it is largely genetics the point at which it starts growing might vary a bit but if you cant grow much facial hair after about 23~24 you probably never will hormones have a major effect on when your hair grows some guys get sent a strong message younger than others.I recall this one guy in my class joker had a full and I mean full upper lip included beard at freaking 15! Still your DNA is going to determine how much hair you will get and where. He would have to look at all his male relatives on both his mother and fathers side to determine roughly what he can expect to get(if he can get any more)

Also testosterone has an effect but again you could have it out the ying yang and still not be able to grow a full beard if genetically you have fewer hair follicles.

I approve of this method.

Oh, and when I was 17 and even 20 my mustache and beard were paltry, to say the least. By the time I was 25 I was growing the full set every winter. The beard came off in the spring and the 'stache around July 1. I still do that sometimes, but since they got grey not so much.

This is some good advice.

I blame karma. I'm the only guy in my family that didn't have one by 16...

Is your facial hair blonde? If it is then it just appears to be thinner than others but in a few more years it wont be that way.

I noticed that alot of the guys in my high school who had more facial hair most of them ate alot of chicken so there must be something in the hormones that they put in chicken so eat alot of Tyson.

16?

Count yourself lucky then Sonny. Most guys that can grow a beard by 16 are bald as a as a cue ball by 30.

Trust me that's way more irritating than a few teenage years of sparse facial hair...
