We had some pretty wild race riots in the US back in the 1960s. Watts. Detroit. Philadelphia. Camden. D.C. Newark. Atlanta. And let's not forget the "police riot" in Chicago in 1968. Last riot that I can recall that wasn't a bunch of jackwagons celebrating a sports victory/defeat was almost 20 years ago: Los Angeles, 1992. I'm certain that there will be others in the future. There's no shortage of "anger" in many cities, and, as history has demonstrated over and over, "anger" provides opportunity for some.
Where the doomsayers (both foreign & domestic) get it wrong (in my opinion) is that they fail to take into account the underlying resiliency of a free society. As much as we may bitch and moan about things, its mostly about things we believe others (including the government) don't deserve, and that we want for ourselves. Although these tensions make for some anxious days from time to time, such temperaments have never been fatal to an orderly society bent on balancing justice and liberty. I'm reminded that 50 years ago today a wall was erected by a government to separate a people. So long as people in the United States have unfettered rights to travel within its borders, and if dissatisfied pick up and move, I don't fear our future as a free people. We'll work it out. |
