Realy tried my best with SH5

Title of thread says it all. Installed Magnum Opus and patch.

To many features overload for me and, nothing looks close to familiar for a WWII U-Boat.

TDW's and gangs mod is Fantastic BTW. And Thank You for all your hard work.

There must be some really good players out here that can understand and play a heavily modded SH5.

I'm just not one of them sadly. And I took to SH3 and SH4 easily Stock and Heavily SuperModded.

Maybe in the future some kind modder with some time on their hands will, make a Mod Pak with the Fixes and, Familiar VII Controls and basic F-Key teleports while still, being able to walk around and enjoy the Graphics and other cool things.

Once up to speed if they want can, go the other modded way

Until then it's back in the box.

I agree with you Firewall and actually did same thing.
I got the game (long story in itself) installed mods and patches (also took some time) and to my surprise i found out that i enjoy playing Silent Hunter 4 much more then SH5. No CTDs no "hidden" controls no bugs no lots of things that make SH5 way less fun to play. I like the graphics in SH5 and great "submarine walk" along with many other innovative things but SH4 not that far from it considering gameplay. Besides playability and "realism" of SH4 somehow feels better. In SH4 i installed only 2 mods TMO and RSRDC. And the game is so "realistic" and enjoyable.
In SH5 i installed full load of mods and game still not feel realistic. I use autotargeting to spare myself headache and that's a heavy burden since i have to move periscope for torpedo to set its angle (which is so war from autotargeting). Besides just installing all these mods makes me uneasy about the game. But i agree all these mods are great!
I hope modders will made one or two mods that will fix all these things althogether like they did with SH3 and SH4 and made them best subsim games ever.
Until then SH5 on shelve and i continue to hunt Japanese ships with SH4.

Silent Hunter 5 was more of a tech demo than a game it was just the developers wanting to show off their abilities in Graphical quality which is currently the thorn in Modern gaming i've seen lots of people who think games suck because they have bad graphics but alot of games that i've played and had good graphics have often been craptastic luckily we still and always will have good ol' Silent Hunter 4/3 also SH5 is a pain to install having to sign up to various websites is really irritating in current PC gaming luckily i bought it 2nd hand and it was rather cheap thankfully so i would'nt have to pay the £15 asking price on Steam

I took out the big mod pak and installed the SH3 Old Stile Gauges.

Better for me, things look more familiar. Now to see about the Peri and UZO.

Then figure out crew.

Tbh I kind of felt the same way you did Firewall (mod overload). I bought 5 when it first came out and enjoyed it stock, then when TDW and the rest of the modders started working on it I loved it. I couldn't get enough of it. I kept myself up to speed and loved all the new aspects of it.

Then I went away for school and couldn't play it (PC Mac conflicts ). When I got back for christmas I tried to play it with the latest of TDWs UIs and all the old mods I had + Magnum Opus. After about an hour and a half of fiddling with files trying to figure out how I had my game set up last time, plus trying to figure out what new features had been added (I'd been following the thread for a few months so I thought I was up to speed) as well as installation and compatibility issues just had me swamped. So, onto the shelf it went.

Tried it again when I got back for summer break and same story. Great game, and with the right mods and such I'm sure it's even better then what I remember it, but until a guide or a true Mega-Mod emerges I'm afraid I won't be wasting my time when I get home for breaks.

Well, I said I'd never buy it, and I never have.

Always thought it was going in the wrong direction with a lot of gimmicks that in no way improved what was achieved with SHIII plus GWX or NYGM.

From what I've seen/read, was pretty much correct with that view, enough for me not to have any intention of buying it.

When you need to mod the crap out of something to make it a half-way decent version of what you had before, that = waste of time and money in my books.

Then there was the entirely retarded "constant connection".

I moved this to the same category of Total War. Excellent concept let down by a failure to address some nagging issues, while introducing a lot of crap that was in no way central to a sim. SHIII was the high point for me. SH4 was a shoddy piece of work. SH5 just plain bollocks. As I said, same with Empire Total War. Stopped buying anything from either house after those abominations.

Sad, as I was an active contributor to discussions around here for a long time. Not necessarily good contributions all the time, lol, but active. Kind of miss my Subsims, but won't touch this thing if you gave me a copy.

Not enough campaign time? Limited U-Boats? What direction did you have in mind for SH5?
Campaign time has been increased, and i'm sure the variety of U-Boats will be increased too, with time.
Once again, the modders have come through.
And once again, have given players from all over the world renewed hope and a new start with SH5.

Here? Not fair, when the most critical comments are to do with too many mods to chose from, or mods conflict with each other.
However, from a player's point of view, and yes, i am a player, the comments about SH5, albeit modded, are positive, to say the least.
You are basing your reading/seeing on gaming magazines' reviews of the stock game?
Which would be unfair and unrealistic.

Once again, your opinion, however, this does not mean that something limited in scope and support can not be turned into something that is wonderful and continuously evolving and being improved upon.
And this doesn't cost you money, you can sit back in the comfort of your own home and watch the improvements being made the modders every day, without having to fork over a cent.

SHIII was the high point for me.

Out of the box it was as shoddy as SH4 out of the box, and infact as shoddy as SH5 out of the box.

Just on closing, i'm not having a go at you m8, just trying to get you to see that a lot, and i mean a lot has changed with SH5, and that you can't always live in the past (SH3), and that like a lot of things in life, you have to give things time to mature and to grow into something complex and beautiful.

I didn't start this thread to bring back the old arguments.

I twas to point out my needs to play SH5 and nothing more.

I don't care about the connection any more.

I just need the fixes and some familiarity and get the hang of it with the great tutorials.

Someday I'll have this loaded with all the soup and feel like I always played it.

Other than CRYSIS this is the only game I ever played with WASD keys.

And CRYSIS is only a Hardware testing tool for rig building I do.

Enjoy SH5 the way you do, I do in my small way.

As for what you wrote, maybe you weren't around during the lead up to SH5 where a whole lot of stuff was discussed. I gave cogent arguments as to what I was looking for and expressed fears of what we were likely to get.

In short, they missed all the former and exceeded themselves on the latter.

For me, having to do craploads of d/l and mods etc etc just to get a game to a quality it could and should have had from the box = waste of my time, which is a waste of money. I am no longer remotely forgiving of companies that produce shoddy work. It sure as hell isn't tolerated FROM me where I work, so I see no reason to reward (read 'give them my money') others when they do it.

I was, and i read a crapload of comments about SH 5 and its inception. That's why i replied originally.

There are many examples of modern games which combine good quality graphics with good gameplay:

1. DCS A10c
2. ArmA2 : Operation Arrowhead
3. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat
4. Company of Heroes
5. GTA IV
6. Left4Dead
7. Battlefield Bad Company 2

Not to mention many older games great before their time like Half Life, System Shock, Deus Ex, Falcon4, Homeworld2.

PC gamers want the best of both worlds, Silent Hunter is no exception and the way I see it is SH5 has the best future. There are good and bad points about SH5 in terms of graphics and playability but as the weeks go by little by little SH5 is evolving.

Personally I do not play SH5 atm because I am not happy with it yet so I can relate to the OP, but I do honestly believe the day is coming soon (probably with the next release of MO) that this will change. The mod ingredients are there and the coming together will be a new milestone in SH5.

And what might you think that GWX and NYGM are? Go play SHIII without mods stock and then see how good it is. Hypocrisy is one of the worst things people do here and I see it time and again that it has lead to ignorance of the facts and just plain shaky arguments.
