Honestly, and I am sure this makes me a bad person, I have never understood why the death penalty can't be applied to mentally ill people.
Who is more of a threat to our society than a nutter who kills people because some invisible friend tells him to? If they are mentally competent to commit the crime, they should be mentally competent to do the time.
