Default Need a bit of help please

While on my 2nd patrol I thought would try my deck out on a lone merchant I sent my man to the deck gun station but he wouldn't fire on the ship and same goes the flak guns as well. There no mods installed it is a clean game of SH5
Am I doing something wrong or something am not doing if so any help will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance

While looking through the binocs at your target, press Space.
The 2 dude handling the cannon are so happy about shooting stuff that they will not stop until anything its floating around you will not get sunk or the ammo is depleted. To stop the killing frenzy, press F5 and they will vanish.

While we're at it, what does the little bar that appears above a target with the moving blue & white line indicate?
I've seen it while using the deck gun and also after firing a torpedo
Thanx

The blue line is flooding and the white line is damage. When either line is empty the ship will sink.
